Actalent Services has a full-time secondment opening under the role of Telecom SCADA Engineer. The role is starting on a 12-month contract term with strong possibility of contract extensions based on project demands and personal performance. The estimated start date for this assignment is Oct./Nov. 2024. The position falls within the Power Utility’s Telecommunications Department.
Position Location: This role will be based out of Castlegar, BC. The selected candidate could relocate to and commute from Castlegar, Trail or Nelson, BC (30 minutes or less drive).
Minimum Qualifications and Desired Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science or equivalent
- 4-8 years of experience with SCADA (Head End experience preferred)
- Registered P.Eng., P.Tech. or P.L.Eng. (NOTE: EITs will be considered if they are within 1 year of obtaining their P.Eng., candidates with international experience in process for their P.Eng. will also be consider)
Considered an asset, but not required:
- Experience in telecommunication applications, design and engineering
- Experience in SCADA within a Power Utility Environment
- Experience with Wide Area Network (WAN) communication systems
- Experience with Local Area Network (LAN) communication systems
- Experience with very high frequency (VHF) VHF Radio
Job Description
- Participate in telecom-related activities for electrical substation projects.
- Develop Standards for control system operations.
- Develop work processes of SCADA Operations
- Provide technical guidance and support for SCADA Operations
- Develop Operator training materials.
- Participate in operator training.
- Investigate and deploy new technologies as they relate to Telecom, SCADA, and sub systems
- Prepare substation WAN network diagrams and telecom equipment rack/panel front view drawings using Microsoft Visio.
- Create purchase requisitions to order telecom equipment such as: routers, IP phones, SFPs, cellular modems, T1 modems, Wi-Fi access points, etc.
- Provide project engineering support for router installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Provide IP subnet information to Protection and Controls SCADA teams for substation LAN devices such as RTUs.
- Document project tasks and progress in ServiceNow and possess the ability to manage and engineer multiple projects simultaneously.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Field Engineers, Network Operations Engineers, Transport Engineers, etc.
- Coordinate with SCADA Engineers in Protection and Controls to assist with RTU configuration.
- Communicate with telecom groups to develop an understanding of current and future technology in the substation.
- Meet project in-service dates as well as project budget requirements as outlined in ServiceNow.
- Coordinate with transmission customers and interconnected companies on associated telecom issues.
- Maintain awareness of NERC requirements related to SCADA and RTU architecture, physical and electronic station security.
- Work under the guidance of Telecom SCADA Engineer II and above employees.
- 10% travel to remote sites.
