Overview The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Seasonal Agricultural Worker for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The position reports to and takes direction from the Research Farm Manager or Field Researcher III.
Among the key duties of the position are the following: 

  • Maintains turfgrass research areas and other research experiments on the farm.
  • Will be required to assist in the maintenance and repair of all research farm tractor equipment and implements used in the operation.
  • Assists in the preparation of the research farm for field days, educational programs or public programs that are held at the facility.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ten years of research farm equipment operation experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to work independently and have knowledge of the farm equipment utilized and its operation.
  • Working independently when assigned tasks is critical.
  • Must have extensive experience with the operation of multiple types of farm tractors and machinery used to prepare research farm soils for project experiments and all agonomic tillage operations including disking, plowing, ripping, leveling.
  • Knowledge of the soil conditions for ground preparation is necessary to obtain the best results for project leaders’ specifications to accomplish field tasks.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to work in hot, humid and dusty conditions and lift 50 pounds.
  • Allergies can be a limiting factor in obtaining this position due to the dirty and dusty working conditions.
Special Conditions
  • Work week schedule is determined by the Research Farm Manager, and is typically 40 hours from 7:30 AM/8AM to 4:00 PM/4:30PM daily for up to 7 months of consecutive service at the Rutgers University Plant Science Research & Extension Farm in Freehold, NJ. 
  • Occasional paid overtime may be required during peak periods because of work load and/or weather conditions.
