About the Department
NCSU Reedy Creek Equine Farm is a 250 acre facility that is a unique collaboration between the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Veterinary Medicine. The farm houses 50-90 horses which are part of university equine herd, as well as client horses for the theriogenology clinical service. Reedy Creek Equine Farm provides support to meet the teaching, research, and extension mission of the university.
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to:
- Assist with the management of the university equine herd
- Develop and teach undergraduate and CVM courses
- Provide support for equine teaching laboratories
- Coordinate logistical details
- Manage community outreach objectives for the farm.
- Daily care of horses and the facility
- Creation of course content and new equine courses
- Undergraduate and veterinary teaching lab instruction
- Inventory management and requisition
- Development, implementation, and support of community outreach and education.
Other ResponsibilitiesMay require seasonal duties or other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Experience/EducationDemonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
- Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to apply knowledge of equine management principles.
- Knowledge of pasture management and rotational grazing strategies and ability to put this into practical application.
- Skill to identify subtle changes in equine behavior.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, systemic diseases, disease processes, & the understanding of the biological & clinical basis of infectious diseases.
- Experience and ability to safely handle stallions for teasing and semen collection.
- Skill to safely load and transport horses.
- Ability to safely operate horse trailer and farm equipment (tractors, manure spreader, ATV).
- Ability to lift up to 70 pounds on a frequent basis with or without reasonable accommodations
- Ability to lift bales of hay consecutively during hay season.
- Preferred QualificationsPreferred equine management experience.
Required License or CertificationValid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 14 days of start date.
