Main purpose of job:This is a fantastic and varied job working in one of the key Diplomatic missions in Kingston. You will work closely with the Estates and Infrastructure Development Manager and the Head of Corporate Services. The British High Commission is seeking to recruit a professional individual with proven trade experience in electrical, plumbing, a/c maintenance or carpentry and be customer-focused, flexible, resilient, and able to work with minimal supervision, for the position of Technical Works Foreman. The main purpose of the role is the day-to-day management of the team to provide reactive maintenance across our offices and residential estate whilst being proactive in ensuring that the estate is preventatively maintained and is fit for purpose, in accordance with established FCDO policy and best practice.The position would suit an applicant looking for a varied and challenging role in a diplomatic mission with a large diverse office and residential estate. As well as having the right technical background, the applicant should have a strong customer focus and able to communicate issues and solutions coherently to staff and colleagues.Roles and responsibilities:Works Foreman:

  • Receive, log and ensure works requests from staff are allocated on a day-to-day basis to members of the works team.
  • Ensure completion of maintenance tasks to British High Commission charter timelines including monitoring, snagging and quality control.
  • Responsibility for overseeing maintenance, testing and inspection of properties, producing and updating work scheduling and registers and the timely completion of PPM schedules in line with FCDO policy.
  • Plan corrective actions to minimise equipment downtime and countermeasures to minimise reoccurrences of faults and call-backs.
  • Assist in maintaining health and safety records on estate inspections, following up on routine monthly/annual checks on gas, electric, water etc.
  • Communicate effectively through progress reports on a daily basis, ensuring that any significant issues are raised with the Technical Works Supervisor.

Procurement and stores management:

  • Be responsible for all stock inventories, ensuring all stock is correctly accounted for and is logged in/out.
  • Authorise the purchase of stock items for works team, ensuring value for money and cross checking all invoices with stock.
  • Identify suppliers and liaise closely with local businesses to provide quality.

Staff management and development:

  • Effectively manage staff workloads, ensuring the works team are given clear instructions and tasked on a daily basis.
  • Identify skills gaps and look for opportunities for the team’s professional and personal development.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • x4 Artisans
  • Casual workers

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Trade experience and up-to-date qualifications in one or more disciplines: electrical/plumbing/carpentry/HVAC.
  • Full driving licence (manual/stick shift).
  • Strong customer focus and ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation and time and team management skills, with good attention to detail.
  • Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive with a proven track record of delivering results to a high standard within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions effectively.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to lift 23 kg.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Legal status to live and work in Jamaica in your own right, from time of application.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Working knowledge of UK Health and Safety and UK site working is an advantage.
  • Strong IT computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite and the internet.
  • Training in Health and Safety to UK standards.

  • Applicants must have the independent right to reside and work in Jamaica.
  • The period of probation for this role is three months, though the British High Commission reserves the right to extend this period in order to fairly assess performance.
  • Full induction and coaching will be arranged for the successful applicant.
  • The salary for this position is $3,113,027.50 JMD per annum
  • Core office hours are 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 1.00pm on Fridays.
  • Annual leave entitlement is 20 days rising to 24 days after five years of service. The BHC Kingston also observes a combination of up to 14 UK and local public holiday days.
  • Due to the nature of the work, this role is in-person only.

The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate initiative and make difficult decisions independently, in a calm manner. Organisational skills are essential, as well as accuracy and attention to detail. The successful candidate will be expected to prioritise and exercise judgement in areas which fall within established practices and procedures.Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.The British Embassy Network offers a strong benefits package.
