JOB SUMMARY:
The Telecom Apprentice Linemen will perform overhead and underground low-voltage line construction and maintenance (fiber optic & copper cabling), as well as the operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of a Lineman and/or Line Foreman. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, driving trucks, operating equipment, loading and unloading material, climbing poles, working from aerial personnel lift devices.
Some of the basic functions of this position evolve into the below:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs overhead and underground low-voltage line construction and maintenance, and operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of assigned Line Foreman.
- Uses low-voltage line construction equipment to include, but not limited to, stringing equipment, backhoes, derrick diggers, material handlers and trucks.
- Efficiently and safely performs line work on a pole or in an aerial lift truck.
- Can successfully climb poles and be productive
- Build strand, lash cable and fiber and be able to handle basic pole transfers
- Familiar with, and understand the use of, all tools and stock
- Maintains responsibility for verifying the condition of all vehicles, equipment and tools provided for use in the performance of work.
- Responsible for general organization of truck and cleanliness of truck both in and out.
- Stock truck with stock for the day’s job assignment
- Check oil and do VIR before every shift
- Loads and unloads material.
- Conscientious regarding the safety of him/herself at times as well as the safety of every other crew member or individual on the job site
- Responds with sound judgment to unusual and hazardous circumstances.
- Assists with recordkeeping and maintains a log of work assigned/performed (hours broken down into specific categories).
- Represents TDX Corporation and BSEt, LLC in a manner conducive to good public relations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED
- Show up for work daily and on time
- Must be able to pass a Background Check, and Drug Screens
- Must possess and continue to possess a valid driver’s license and pass random driver’s license screenings
- Ability to make independent judgment and perform repetitive tasks
- Regular contact with co-workers and customers
- Must be able to take and pass, and continue to pass a DOT Physical
- Travel a requirement; nights & weekends as well. Work is performed mostly throughout the State of Hawaii Islands and the Pacific Basin.
- Overtime should be expected
- Certification from a lineman school desired, not required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of low-voltage Telecom industry; construction techniques and terminology; familiar with overhead and underground construction standards.
- Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations such as calculating figures and amounts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers, vendors, contractors, and other diverse audiences while providing outstanding customer service.
- Strong technical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, research, organizational and analytical skills, combined with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet established deadlines. Ability to multitask is also essential while remaining flexible with changing priorities and deadlines.
- Well-reasoned decision making with a high attention to detail regarding organization, planning, workflow, and project prioritization to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and accurately.
- Highly ethical, self-motivated individual with ability to work independently and/or with limited direction, as well as cooperatively in a team environment, while consistently demonstrating collaborative, respectful and productive work habits.
ENVIRONMENTAL & PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
The work environment conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. This position works primarily in the field and is exposed to all types of weather conditions including temperature extremes and rainy environments. Outdoor setting involves all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites and road rights of way. Subject to outside weather/driving conditions.
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position (this list is not fully inclusive of the physical demands required of a Telecom Apprentice Lineman).
- Works around low voltage wiring with insulated rubber gloves when appropriate.
- Works in confined spaces, such as underground vaults requiring entry though a manhole.
- Works in ditches up to 60 inches deep and 24 inches wide when laying underground wire.
- Frequently lift, transport and/or move up to approximately 75 lbs. each day in the performance of regular duties and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Changes position frequently and works in awkward positions. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and descending a stepladder may also be required.
- Required to stand for extended periods of time, sit while driving and/or attending meetings, and walk on uneven ground in all types of terrain.
- Climbs in and out of buckets of aerial personnel-lift with tool belt, materials and equipment.
- Required to push, pull, twist, reach and use finger dexterity to grip/handle tools, equipment controls, etc.
- Work entails regular entering/exiting of vehicle, in all driving conditions.
- Drive on behalf of BSEt, LLC and/or report for work in all types of weather.
- Exposed to solvents and citrus-based cleaners when terminating and/or splicing underground cables. This is often performed in the ditch, on the pole, or in a vault.
- Exposed to noise from traffic, construction equipment, jack hammers, hydraulic saws and tamps, chippers, etc. for up to four hours per day.
- Exposed to numerous types of pollen, depending upon location, season or climatic conditions. May also be exposed to bee/wasp stings, or animal bites.
- Exposed to chemicals used to treat poles primarily through skin contact, or inhaling wood dust after drilling. Exposures may include creosote and/or pentachlorophenol.
- Alertness and concentration necessary at all times, including day/night, inclement weather, and storm situations involving long hours of work.
- Requires far and near visual acuity, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and night vision.
- Hearing and speech requirements such that you can hear and be heard if working on top of 45-foot pole or 100 feet away from a co-worker, despite heavy background noise.
