Reporting to the Engineering Specialist, this position will assist with project engineering and deployment for various capital projects in the Telecom Department such as Wind Farm Telecom Integration, Telecom Network Upgrade project, etc. You will be required to work closely with members of the Telecom Team, T&D Technical Services, T&D operations, as well as other technical groups, to ensure the projects are successfully implemented.

Key elements of this role include:

You will design and implement telecommunication systems such as microwave radio, fiber optic, mobile radio, and data networks to meet the needs of the company. In doing this, you will be accountable for the following: 

• Prepare equipment, panel layout, wiring, bill of material and cabling drawings using manual and CADD based methods.
• Prepare installation and commissioning specifications and ensure that they are properly adhered to and implemented in the field.
• Participate in design support and budget preparation work by assisting in the preparation of estimates and schedules, obtaining quotations, ordering and payment for materials and services.
• Provide technical support to maintenance staff, ensure adequate spares and documentation is provided for working systems, evaluate failure reports and recommend corrective actions.
• Contribute to the formation of standards and guidelines for system usage and monitors to ensure that activities performed on the system conform to these rules.
• Assist other members of the Telecommunications Team with duties as required. You will be responsible for personal safety, that of coworkers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
• You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.

These skills will make you successful:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of two (2) years related experience
• Full membership (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams focused on customer outcomes.
• You are a self-starter and leader with proven organizational and analytical skills who is able to function effectively in a team environment.
• You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong computer skills and a valid driver’s license.
• You must demonstrate your commitment to personal development.

Experience in the following areas would be an asset:

• Microwave radio
• Fiber optics
• Networking IP/MPLS, LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, SNMP and VOIP technologies
• SCADA Systems
• Substation Environment
