Become a Telecom Engineer 3 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll perform telecommunications engineering tasks on projects with a moderate financial and operational impact on the Company. You will analyze telecommunications requirements, produce high level project cost and staff resource estimates, design telecommunications systems, initiate capital work orders, place orders for procurement of equipment, develop detailed installation job instructions and documentation, develop, and manage schedules and track project progress. You will support projects that range from 1 to 3 years in duration with budgets between $100K to $2M. You may also serve as an expert for the organization in the respective field and may be asked to provide training and direction to other engineers.

A day in the life – Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!
- System Design – develop telecommunications system (e.g. fiber optic, lightwave and microwave transport systems, MPLS and DWDM platforms as well as voice systems, satellite and radio systems and data systems) designs and circuits, direct the design of facilities such as communications rooms and towers to meet project and system objectives considering a wide variety of complex factors such as environmental constraints, terrain, accessibility, availability of power and proximity to other SCE facilities. Evaluate systems and equipment, make recommendations regarding deployment of new systems and network management methods.
- Analyze Project Requirements – analyze telecommunications requirements with respect to system capacity, system reliability and technical parameters, cost, schedule, and scope. Develop plans of service for projects, including elements such as required communications facilities, facility site location, required systems.
- Project Estimating – develop multiyear (typically 1 – 3 years duration) project cost and schedule estimates for projects, incorporating complete scope, cost, and schedules. Publish cost estimates which are conveyed to internal clients and external customers, noting project assumptions, constraints, and disclaimers.
- Documentation – ensure that technical documentation related to assigned projects are produced and updated in accordance with established processes and standards. This includes on-line systems, drawings, and job instructions. Influence the development of documentation standards and practices for systems which are newly deployed in the Telecom Network Environment.
- Project Management – develop and manage project scope, schedule, and budget. Provide updates regarding project financial performance such as budgeted/committed/actual expenditures. Coordinate requirements and project delivery with internal Grid Services partners as well as external teams in Transmission Telecom, Edison Carrier Solutions, Corporate Real Estate, T&D Engineering and MPO, T&D Substation Construction and Maintenance, Generation and Hydro. Coordinate and interface with external utilities, governmental agencies, and external clients, as required by project scope.
The essentials
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or scientific/technical/math field.
- Five years of engineering experience.
- Experience with telecommunication systems (i.e., fiber optic, lightwave and microwave transport systems, MPLS and DWDM platforms as well as voice systems, satellite and radio systems and data systems).
The preferred
- Broad knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles necessary to perform very complex or unique assignments for a specific discipline, various installations, or services.
You should know
- This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

- The primary work location for this position is Rosemead, CA. However, the successful candidate may also be asked to work for an extended amount of time at (alternate work location).
- Position will require up to 10% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
- This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position – Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
- This position has an option for a 9/80 Alternate Work Schedule or 40hrs/5 days a week.
