Position Announcement
Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time Telecom Technician! Working under the close supervision of the Telecom Administrator, the Telecom Technician installs, monitors, and assists in maintaining telecommunication systems. Performs new installations and replace outdated equipment, including fiber optics and data lines. The technician assists in monitoring system performance, troubleshoots issues, and resolves problems. Additionally, they read blueprints for cable placement and assists in maintaining accurate records of installation and maintenance activities.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Installation and Maintenance: Under the close supervision and direction of the Telecom Administrator, installs, monitors, and assists in maintaining existing or proposed telecommunication systems. Performs new installs or replaces outdated equipment. Installs and repairs cable, including fiber optics and logging lines.
- Troubleshooting and Performance Monitoring: Under the guidance of the Telecom Administrator, monitors accessibility and performance of the telecommunications system and troubleshoots and resolves problems.
- Documentation and Planning: Reads blueprints or schematics to determine layout or placement of cables or switches. Assists in the maintenance of accurate records of installation, maintenance activities and system performance.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of any combination of computer-related education and/or technical experience related to the Summary of Duties.

Knowledge
- Basic understanding of telecommunications systems and equipment.
- Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and repair of telecom hardware, including fiber optics and logging lines.
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
- Awareness of safety standards and procedures related to telecom installations and maintenance.
- Knowledge and experience with network component analyzers, scanners, testing tools and procedures for data circuits.
- Knowledge and experience working in a customer service, team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Skills
- Proficient in installing and maintaining telecommunications systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve system issues.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong attention to detail for maintaining accurate records and following design specifications.
- Ability to use various telecom tools and equipment.
