UCL BRC 3-YEAR PhD STUDENTSHIP

University College London

Job title:

UCL BRC 3-YEAR PhD STUDENTSHIP

Company

University College London

Job description

About us The candidate will be based in UCL’s department of Population Science and Experimental Medicine, a dynamic hub of epidemiological, clinical and data science expertise. Of note, the research team has access to, and skill in managing, both cohort and nationwide electronic health records data. The project will build on our group’s strong foundation of chronic disease research – evidenced by several recent high profile publications on ethnicity-related health inequity (Eastwood et al, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lanepe.2022.100557), and the characterisation (Kuan et al, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1016/S2589-7500(22)00187-X) and management (Langenberg et al, 2023 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41591-023-02420-6) of multiple long-term conditions. In addition, the candidate will be able to access UCL’s outstanding range of postgraduate training courses and support.

About the role There are marked differences in many long-term conditions, e.g. cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, cancer and dementia, in the UK by ethnic and socio-economic group. Some of this may be due to differences in how medicines are prescribed, and how regularly (or not) a person takes these. The candidate will apply state-of-the-art data science techniques (including potentially target trial emulation, methods to assess time-varying confounding and causal machine learning approaches) to understand the effects of differences in prescribing or differences in uptake impact on disease outcomes. National electronic health records data (e.g. the Clinical Practice Research Datalink [CPRD]) and cohort studies with health records linkage (e.g. UK Biobank, the Southall and Brent Revisited [SABRE] study and other in-house cohorts) will be used. The project would facilitate the development of pharmaco-epidemiological and data science skills and is suitable for a candidate interested in health inequalities.

About you The candidate will hold a first class or 2:1 UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject (or international equivalent) and a recognised Master’s degree in health informatics, epidemiology, data science, statistics or a related field, or have equivalent research experience.
