Background

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from healthcare. In 2023, MSF team project teams, including medical, logistical and administrative staff, worked in 74 countries.

The MSF Sweden Innovation Unit (SIU), part of MSF Sweden, and the Manson Unit, part of MSF UK, support MSF’s operations through innovation and research projects with the aim to improve the organisation’s health programming.

About the assignment

The Manson Unit’s Sapling Nursery Programme supports MSF staff to explore, develop and test innovative new approaches to challenges in MSF projects, to ultimately give people better access to medical care. The Manson Unit Innovation (MUI) and MSF Sweden Innovation Unit (SIU) teams are now documenting their joint approach for, and the key steps of, an inclusive innovation process. A description of each step, including tips and best practices for each step, will be collated on a (public) website targeting Sapling Nursery Programme Innovation Facilitators and other actors in the medical- humanitarian innovation space. The aim of the website is to provide users with easy access to relevant information and tools, processes and methods to run diverse innovative projects and initiatives. As such, the website needs to be easy to use and work over low bandwidth.

We are looking for an experienced UI/Front-End Developer Consultant with expertise in Webflow or WordPress to design and develop this website. Following the first phase, which will be finalized after the delivery of the initial website, a second phase during which additional features and pages are added may be launched in 2025.

Objectives

The UI/Front-End Developer Consultant will design and develop a website featuring MSF SIU and MSF MUI’s inclusive innovation process and tool library. They will also produce tutorials and/or train MSF SIU and MSF MUI team members to ensure they have the skills and information required to manage the final website. This is likely to be a multi-engagement work. The first engagement will focus on building the website with basic functionality only.

Specific requirement for the website/phase 1

When developing your proposal, please keep the following features/functionalities in mind:

Main pages and tool repository/library:

  • The initial website will include one or several pages describing the different steps of the inclusive innovation process. The website should also have a handful of other pages (about us, contact, etc.).
  • Additionally, it should include a tool repository or library that allows users to search for/filter innovation tools and methods based on name and characteristics.

Back-end Data collection:

  • We wish to collect user data (e.g. drop-off rates, most and least visited pages, CTA clicks, etc.). The later version of the site might collect basic user info (role, name, email, etc.) and include user login.

Accessible and easy-to-use front-end and back-end:

  • The website should be accessible and work well in low-network settings. It will be managed by MSF SIU and MSF MUI team members and should be designed to allow team members with only basic CMS experience and website management skills to easily change content.

The initial website may be added to/expanded in 2025. The MSF SIU and MSF MUI teams are considering the possibility of including a multistep form with conditional logic so that users are presented with a tailored experience/information based on their needs. To make full use of the form, users may be requested to login. Although this will not be part of the initial website, the ideal candidate should demonstrate experience in developing these types of features/functionalities and consider these potential future features when designing the initial website.

Responsibilities

As the UI/Front-end developer consultant you will:

  • Collaborate closely with the various entities, target audiences, and website design requirements of the MSF Sweden Innovation Unit and the Manson Unit Innovation teams to understand brand identity, target audiences, and website design requirements.
  • Create initial wireframes and templates for the content, with the aim of creating rapid prototyping for testing the website’s features with future users. As such, you are expected to create low-fi prototypes to be tested with selected users.
  • Design, build and develop a website in either Webflow or WordPress. This includes integrating potentially third-party and non-native features as needed and the ability to provide informed advice concerning the cost of maintenance of these features.
  • Design and present creative concepts to other project team members throughout all project phases.
  • Optimize website performance and functionality and ensure compatibility across various browsers and devices.
  • Conduct thorough testing to identify and fix bugs or issues before delivering the initial website.
  • Provide the right approach and build for ease of maintenance.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of web design experience

  • Proven web design experience, development (UI/UX and front-end), and rapid prototyping

  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates your attention to detail

  • Experience and track record using at Webflow and/or WordPress

  • Excellent command of English, written and spoken

    It’s valuable if you have

  • Experience in training and/or providing guidance to teams in maintaining websites developed in Webflow or WordPress

  • Experience in working for NGOs or non-profit organisations

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript

Specific Deliverables

  • A website developed in Webflow or WordPress, including relevant pages and features/functionalities as listed above
  • Training session(s) and/or material to equip members of the MSF Sweden Innovation Unit and MSF Manson Unit Innovation teams to manage the website after it has been delivered

About you

  • You are a strong collaborator who can bring cross-functional knowledge to the table
  • You can create top-quality design work and innovative online experiences for diverse audiences
  • You are not scared of iterating, sharing your informed perspective and getting feedback to create top-quality user experiences
  • You are rigorous in your design work and have developed visually appealing and user-friendly websites that align with your client’s objectives
  • You are interested in developing (or have already developed) digital products for low resource settings (poor internet quality, rudimentary screens)
