Terms of Reference

The DFS UX/UI Designer will work transversely across all DFS active projects requiring UX/UI support, focusing on external partner technology tools, data visualizations and dashboards, and internal website designs.

Roles and responsibilities:

The DFS UX/UI Designer will be seated within the Communications team but work closely with product/project managers and the software development team to enhance the user experience of the various products and platforms.

● Conduct in-depth user research, including interviews, surveys, and usability studies, to understand the needs and pain points of users and develop user personas.

● Plan and conduct usability testing sessions to gather feedback from users in real-world contexts and iterate on designs to improve functionality, accessibility, and user satisfaction.

● Translate research insights into actionable design features that enhance the usability of platforms and tools, especially related to data visualization and reporting. ● Design wireframes, prototypes, and mockups for web and mobile interfaces. ● Collaborate with the product development team to ensure that user feedback is implemented effectively and work closely with the technical team to understand the technical capabilities and limitations of the platforms.

● Design dynamic and interactive data visualization elements (dashboards, infographics, charts) and data analysis outputs to make complex data easily interpretable ● Design interfaces that are accessible to users with varying levels of technical expertise, including those in low-tech environments.

● Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG) and design for inclusivity, considering users in various geographic regions with different languages and abilities. ● Create detailed documentation for developers and product teams, ensuring smooth handoff and a clear understanding of UX/UI decisions.

● Provide guidance on design system implementation and maintain consistency across all platforms and tools.

Language: Fluent in written and spoken English.

Qualifications:

● Proven experience in UX/UI design, preferably in humanitarian, non-profit, or data-driven sectors (3+ years recommended).

● Proficiency in design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, etc.) and familiarity with prototyping and wireframing tools.

● Strong understanding of UX research methodologies, including user interviews, persona creation, and usability testing.

● Experience working with data platforms or analysis tools, with a focus on designing for complex data interactions.

● Strong collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams.

● Familiarity with accessibility standards and designing for inclusivity, particularly in low-resource environments.

Desirable Skills:

● Experience with humanitarian tools, platforms, or environments.

● Understanding of mobile-first and responsive design principles, given the varied tech landscape in humanitarian settings.

● Knowledge of front-end development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to better collaborate with developers.

● Familiarity with no-code and low-code tools like Retool, which can be valuable for rapid prototyping and building internal tools.

Reporting line: Communications and Digital Content Manager

Additional information:

● This is a remote job that can be completed from anywhere in the world. ● This job is full-time for the duration of the contract.

● Applicants will be offered a salary ranging from $2,700 to $4,000. The final salary will be determined based on individual expertise and the ability to meet the specific requirements of the position.

● The start date is ASAP and the duration of the contract is 6 months with the possibility of an extension
