Our team and mission

The Connectivity and Secure Communications (CSC) Directorate supports innovation to boost the competitiveness of European industry in the global satellite telecommunications market. This involves a wide range of activities from space-based technology, systems, product for telecommunications development up the down-to-earth application of space-based services. This requires engagement with a wide range of industrial, academic and institutional partners.

The Technology and Products Division within ESA’s CSC Directorate manages a large number of technology and product developments targeting the commercial satellite telecommunications market. These are carried out with industrial partners under the auspices of the ARTES Core Competitiveness (ARTES CC) programme element, with the objective of increasing the global competitiveness of ESA Member States’ industry. This includes establishing annual work plans to define and develop the technology needed to enable the satellite telecommunication systems of the future.

You will work within the Space Segment section of the Technology and Products Division. This section is responsible for all space technology and product developments carried out under ARTES CC.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

Development of a complete end-to-end Telecommunications Systems design tool that encompasses high level business objectives with flow down through systems sizing tools, system architectures, space segment related payload and platform design tools, ground segment architectures, and end-user set-ups.

This position will require you to develop a very good understanding of telecommunication satellite business models, mission and system architectures, existing and novel satellite and ground segment designs, as well as the underlying technology (e.g. thermal management subsystem, propulsion, electrical generation, etc.), technology trends and cost models.

This opportunity will provide you with a solid grounding in telecommunication satellite systems engineering, technology trends and business planning. You will be expected to interact with internal experts in ESA. Opportunities for interaction with industry experts are also anticipated.

This work will design and integrate various business models and off-the-shelf existing mission and satellite design modelling tools (e.g. STK) and bespoke internal tools in various stages of maturity and functional scope and incorporate them into an overall set of tools that can trade multiple mission architectures based on potential market needs and business plans and flow this down to detail system, ground segment, and satellite design solutions to consider the most competitive and feasible solutions. It will also involve implementing complex trade-off of many factors, such as the overall mission performances, launcher options, down to specific aspects of platform size, mass, power supply and thermal dissipation capabilities.

You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your Master’s degree in an engineering discipline.

Additional requirements

You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

During the interview motivation and overall professional perspective/career goals will also be explored.

A solid space systems engineering background with good understanding of underlaying technology disciplines (i.e. electrical, mechanical, thermal, etc) as well as a strong software modelling ability principles will be needed.

A basic understanding on business case principles would be an asset.
